Pickles employees give a rundown on the cars they drive and why

Are you in the market for a quality used vehicle? Maybe it's your first car, or you need an upgrade to the reliable family people mover? Shopping around for a car to suit your needs can be a challenging experience, that’s why we’ve enlisted the people of Pickles to give their recommendations by dishing on the cars they drive and why.

From a vintage Hilux workhorse to compact drives for city slickers, here’s the cars the people of Pickles pick.

Hyundai Tucson
Recommended by Jennifer Heaphy, Digital Marketing Performance Lead

We recently purchased a 2022 Hyundai Tucson and we LOVE it! It has loads of space, drives really well, and comes with great accessories like a touch screen and wireless charging dock. It is pretty good on fuel which is handy for long trips.

Holden Commodore Ute
Recommended by Michael Balloch, Branch Unit Coordinator

I own a 2001 Holden Commodore Ute VU ss with a 6 speed manual. This vehicle is my show car and I like to take it for long drives to show it off. I would recommend this car to someone who likes to turn heads, drive with power, and maybe needs a work ute. It’s perfect for someone who wants a bit of history as Holden is no longer making cars.

Volkswagen Polo
Recommended by Lucinda Padgett, Innovation and Invention Specialist

I have a 2021 VW Polo which I recently purchased and love very much! It’s the perfect size and great on fuel consumption — I use it to drive to various commitments from Sydney down to the south coast. It’s perfect for me because I only need a small car and it’s enough to fit 2 to 4 people comfortably. The features, such as the touch screens, wireless charging and digital dashboard, are all super easy to use.

Holden Calais
Recommended by James Kelly, Product Coordinator

I drive a 2006 Holden Calais. It’s my everyday car, my limousine and my sports car. There’s nothing it can’t do! It has plenty of room for carting around family and friends and packs plenty of power for long trips on a motorway.

Volkswagen Tiguan
Recommended by Eden Puriri, Content Creator

We have a Volkswagen Tiguan 4WD and it is the perfect vehicle for our small family. As a rural family, the Tiguan provides offroading capacity while still being compact enough for easy city navigation. It has plenty of boot space for a pram and racks for transporting recreational gear. Couldn’t recommend it more for an active, young family!

Toyota Camry Ateva
Recommended by Vicki Messina, Customer Success Officer

I have a 2014 Toyota Camry Ateva bought from Pickles in 2016. It comes with lots of legroom for grown-up kids and it’s very easy for elderly family members to climb into. It is a smooth drive, especially for long trips on interstate highways. It has a great amount of boot space.

Toyota Hilux
Recommended by Harry Stack, Industrial Booking In Staff

I own a 34-year-old Toyota Hilux in stock conditions with 144K on the odometer. I use my car for a bit of everything, but enjoy taking it off the beaten path and some hard-to-reach places. I would recommend this vehicle because it’s incredibly reliable as well as easy and affordable to fix. It is nigh on indestructible and performs fantastically off-road.

Mazda 3
Recommended by Grant Sharp, Contact Centre Manager

My Mazda 3 is my go-to for everything. It’s easy and fun to drive, big enough to be practical and small enough to be very fuel efficient. It is extremely reliable and also cheap to service.

Volkswagen Jetta
Recommended by Darren Southam, Customer Success Team Supervisor

I purchased my 2016 Jetta new and it has been a great little car. It’s a very fun drive and a quick little beast. I recommend the Jetta if you’re like me and prefer sedans over hatchbacks. It is my first small car — I’ve historically bought larger ones but found my Jetta to be a much more reliable option.

Subaru Outback
Recommended by Christopher Karykides, Account Manager

I have two Subaru Outbacks, a 2006 3.0L petrol and a 2014 2.0L diesel bought from Pickles. We use the diesel as the main family car because it’s good with fuel and getting kids to school and their various activities. The petrol is the workhouse and is used for small trips around town and carting bikes/sporting equipment. The Outback is a great allrounder, it’s not too big and not too small and the large boot is perfect for our family of four. Being Subaru vehicles, they are pretty reliable and relatively affordable to maintain compared to European equivalents.
